American Nations Fair - Previous Work

Instituto Lenguas Vivas is organizing a fair about the nations of America. Our participation consists in an investigation about English Guyana:

English Guyana is a member of the Commonwealth. Its limits are the Atlantic Ocean, Surinam, Brazil and Venezuela. Georgetown is its capital city. Its people speak English and Creole. Most of its inhabitants are Christian.

Guyana is the only English speaking country of South America. It is north of Brazil. Its monetary unit is the Guyanese dollar. English Guyana’s flag is also called ‘The Golden Arrowhead ' because the flag has a yellow and a red arrow on its green base. It also has a black line and a white line. Each colour in Guyana’s flag has a meaning. Green represents the forest. Yellow represents the gold and the nation’s bright future. Red shows the vitality of the people of Guyana. White represents the rivers and Black represents endurance.

The Coat of Arms of Guyana was granted by the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It symbolizes the indigenous people of the country, the mining, sugar and rice industries, the three main rivers of Guyana and the national bird. The national motto, "One people, One Nation, One Destiny", appears on the scroll below the shield.

Guyana is derived from an Amerindian word, "land of many waters". This country is often associated with the Europeans' legendary search for El Dorado - a man and city of gold many believed to be in Guyana.

Guyana’s climate is hot and humid. The landscapes are very varied: you can see lots of forests and mountains! The trees are very big and the animals give colour to the landscape. Lots of natural resources are found in this country: gold, diamonds and oil are the most important.

The culture of Guyana is very similar to that of the English speaking Caribbean. It is so similar that Guyana is included and accepted as a Caribbean Nation. Only its geographical location separates it from the rest of the English speaking Caribbean. Guyana shares similar interests with these islands in the West Indies, such as food, festive events, music and, sports.

Guyana is often called the "Land of Six Peoples" for its indigenous Amerindian population, descendants of African slaves, Asian Indian, Chinese and Portuguese indentured labourers and European (British, Dutch and French) colonialists.

Throughout these last part of the year, Miss Dora helped us gather lots of information, and we, as homework, did lots of posters. Miss Dora worked on the map of Guyana and she showed us beautiful stamps of that country. Thanks to Sofía’s family, we prepared a big book about Guyana with a guestbook for parents to sign when they visit us. Sofi and her family also decorated our classroom with emblems of Guyana: the national flag and the coat of Arms.

On November 10th, the fair will tale place in the institute, and parents, relatives and lots of friends will come to see our work. We will tell them about Guyana's location, the meaning of each colour in the flag, and a lot of information we learnt with the teacher.
